Benadryl = hyper kids

It warmed up a little the past 2 days, so some of the bugs are out, its not unbearable, more of an annoyance. So the kids got bitten by them..just once but this time the welts are still huge so last time this happened, we took them to the hospital and the doc said it was an allergy and told us to give them benadryl.  The instructions was 4 – 6 hours and doc said it will cause drowsiness. I think the evil side of me rejoices a little since that means they especially Ava might nap for a while. Well obviously not my kids, they were hyper and happy, technically they are doped up so my guess Benadryl is the dope equivalent for kids. They eventually went down for a nap after much dilly-dally and this was about 3 weeks ago.

Fast forward today, I gave them benadryl again because both are bitten on their back, just 1 bite each. And its 11.01pm now and the girl is still not asleep. The boy finally slept at 10pm. The girl asked for her 4th potty break in an hour, its soo annoying, she has this stalling technique and she knows exactly how/when to use it. So I came to the conclusion that I’ll be damned if i follow the instructions aka to give them benadryl every 4 – 6 hours..They will probably be jumping thru the roof then.

  1. Yup, some kids react like that to benadryl even though it should make them tired. I haven’t crossed that bridge with my son yet but I’m hoping he’s ‘normal’ and goes nighty night when he gets some. We’ll see.
