I had this fabric for a while now, and I was vetting thru seamstresses and they are a little harder to come by. Well one might ask, why not sew one myself. Well for one thing, I hate sewing for myself since I have to try it on just about every single step of the sewing process to make sure it fits and secondly I really dont like sewing amautis, they are time consuming and have far too many pieces. The amauti pattern I have, there is 14 pieces to it..yes I counted..that is like if i were to sew a wool jacket for myself..not going to happen. Though I can do it, I just dont want too. But I finally found a seamstress, she did such an amazing job that I think this by far is my favourite amauti. The fit is PERFECT, I was floored when she came to deliver it to me and she cant quite understand why I was so excited…lol I initially wanted the traditional pullover kind but changed my mind and went with the vest style especially after seeing the ones on Jen’s blog. I thought at first the weight of the kids were going to rip the zipper but the weight is really on the balls of my shoulders so zipper ripping here.
I requested for sleeves but now that i see, it looks odd, so as of now, I’ve taken both sleeves off and leaving it sleeveless. This amauti has no hood but a collar which is really just for looks. Avarayna fits in nicely in there which means there will be tons of room for Ben. When the lady came to drop this to me, as soon as Ava saw me put it on, she wanted to be amaaq-ed.

I am getting very spoiled with the amauti, its easy, I dont have to fumble with any ties and I just put it on, slide them in and we are done. Its especially great when Frank is away and I hate to be lugging the chariot since Ava prefers to walk and fights to get out of it and Ben is always amaaq-ed. I think it saves my sanity doing it this way. I find myself getting extremely frustrated when I let them walk because Ben is all over the place and if I pick Ben up, Avarayna acts up and vice versa, and its too annoying. And my girl can walk..I think she probably walks better than most adult!
And for fun sake, I made Ben a sunhat, and of course Ava wants it because its of airplane fabric and she is obssessed with airplanes. But with Frank gone most of the time, I think its her way of connecting to him per se. When I ask here where is daddy, she always says daddy’s in the airplane. She learned a new word a few weeks ago and its “helicopter” but in pure cuteness, she pronounce it as “happy-copter”. I cant get her to say it correctly. Oh well. I made it reversible, and Yvy, yes its from Ottobre with some modification.

the reverse side

the reverse side fabric, its called “profession dream” and I think its a great sunhat fabric!

yerp!the fabric really goes well w the sunhat!

Where did you get your pattern for your amauti? I have wanted an amauti for forever, but no one in my family remembers how to make them… and I have moved too far away from anyone who would know. I have tried twice to have one made for me, but both attempts were dissapointments (and very costly at that).
Would you mind copying your pattern and lending it to me? This would be the last winter my boy would fit in an amauti, my last chance to carry him in it…
Please let me know…
Thank you so very much.

hello
i had an inuit seamstress made my amauti. i however have a pattern but i am sorry but i cannot give you the pattern, its an intellectual property of the inuit culture. there is no pattern commercially available for amautis. another option is getting a chunei made, they are an alternative to amauti or try gooling “baby wearing jacket”.
