Our overdue Christmas present

So I finally got my sewing machine, I’ve decided to get the Husqvarna Viking mechanical machine. It was either that or the Janome mechanical but decided on the Viking instead. So far it works great and I sew thru 8 layers of knit fabric and 6 layers of denim on it with no problem. Of course this has also made me a little crazy with fabric shopping. I bought materials enough to make bunting bags for the 2 kids for the chariot, cloth diapers for the baby, Frank wants me to sew a pouch for is camera lenses and I am currently making some DIY babylegs, also known as leggings for Avarayna. The rest of the projects need proper planning so I am leaving it till I get back to Arviat but the babylegs are fairly easy and man it is addictive! I’ve made 2 so far, one for Avarayna and another one for the new baby. I need to pick up knee high socks to make them for Avarayna though since the ones I have are regular socks and currently they comes just above the knees for Avarayna and I wanted them to be all the way up her thighs. But here are a few pics.

on the left is the finished product and the stripes socks is how i turned that into the grey pair of leggings.

my little model

they are suppose to look like the black ones she has on, the purpose of babylegs is since its now cold, we put on tights on her before we put on her fleece-lined jeans. But its cumbersome to change her and strip her down if we have to change her on the go. So the baby legs aka leggings are great since i can change her without taking it off her legs. To buy them is $12 plus shipping, i bought the socks 5 for $10 so its WAY cheaper making them on my own. Leggings for toddlers are more expensive though, I saw similar ones in Gymboree and GAP at $24.95 a pair, so its pricey. I am glad I am able to sew them for her.

My next project is the cloth diapers for the new baby, he probably will be using disposables for a while till i get them sewn but will post that too once i am done with it.

With my current new hobby, I’m also researching and reading more on fabrics. When I first started to learn to sew, I was I think 14 years old and it was on my grandmothers old black antique Singer sewing machine, that thing was a workhorse. Then my mother bought a mechanical Singer sewing machine, and I learned to make more stuff on that, my mother is a great seamstress so it helps. But then I left home to go to school and left the sewing hobby. It wasnt till now that I’ve picked it back up that I’m so amazed at the choices, be it fabric or the machines itself!!

When reading about making cloth diapers, I read about a lot of different fabric that I can use. Some of them are really hard to find in Canada, well at least in Winnipeg. One particular fabric that I am very intrigued about is hemp, apparently they are made from the stalks of the cannabis plant? yes people, you are reading that right, the actual marijuana plant. But they are great in retaining moisture which is great for the soaker pad in cloth diapers (if i am not wrong). Another fabric that i am interested in is bamboo, yes you are reading it right again, fabric spun from the actual bamboo plant. They are super soft and both of them are eco-friendly. So imagine my excitement when I saw these 2 fabrics at the Forks market but unfortunately they only sell ready made stuff and nothing by the yards though I can order them in. But this store/fabric, is worth checking out.

they even have hemp baby slings.

‘Nuff about me, Frank got his overdue Christmas pressie as well. He wanted a wide angle lens for his camera, so I am sure we will have some awesome northern light pictures taken when we get back to Arviat. I am not missing Arviat…lol but I do miss our house!

  6. My wife recently purchased a bag of soapnuts to use for cleaning cloth diapers for our baby girl. They worked better than any other laundry detergent she had tried. She was so impressed that she bought them in bulk & opened up an e-store so that she have a home-based business and still raise our daughter. Her site is http://Stores.HotterThanHealth.com Check it out!

  7. Soap nuts work great for cloth diapers. They also helped me get rid of my eczema.
