IMAGE FROM BABYTALK MAGAZINE AUGUST COVER
August 1 – 7 2006 marks World’s Breastfeeding Week. This magazine cover has sparked a lot of controversy amongst women and perhaps some men. I think the cover of this magazine is done very tastefully and it serves the no 1 purpose of the breast – to provide nourishment for the human baby. I dont remember where have I read that breasts has always been seen as mammary glands instead of sex objects till the Victorian Era (I think it was the 1700 or the 1800, I am not sure).
Frank saw on the news tonight where a woman commented she was totally disgusted with the image. Its appaling that such statement would come from a woman. I dont see anything sexual with the picture. But one thing for sure, those campaigning to encourage more mothers to breastfeed are probably going to work extra hard now as even women seems to think this beautiful magazine cover offensive.

hi! first time here..nice blog!
being a breastfeeding mom (well, only one month so far and counting), i can see the beauty of the picture because that baby sure is a cute cherub! look at those doe eyes!
…but maybe the controversy is caused by the positioning of the baby here…(straight up, as opposed to cradled sideways)… it’s just a guess..but, that is not the way a baby usually nurses from the teat… Is that why it’s deemed sexual perhaps? because that position wud be assumed by a non-baby?

Blah… Not everyone can be pleased!!! If you cover the whole thing up, some ppl are still going to have something to say.. so what I say is “If it offends you, don’t look at it!!”
hehehe

marina, welcome! though i cannot speak as a breastfeeding mother as i am yet to experience it, but the position has nothing to do with a non baby.
there is a lot of “holds” on how to breastfeed a baby and the cradled hold is the most basic but there is also football hold and such. this baby seems a little older and i have seen women breastfed thier babies in baby carrier (bad word – but it looks like the monkey baby position). breastfeeding position depends on the mother and baby. in this case, the picture is totally tastefully done. just my 2 cents.
